The Dark Knight- Blu-Ray (5 out of 5 stars)
Warner/ December 9, 2008

What It’s About:
This one? It’s all about the Joker, aka Heath Ledger. It’s all anyone talked about with this movie and he is indeed brilliant in it. I also love Maggie Gyllenhaal in here, she’s hot stuff and waaaaay better than Katie Holmes.
Technical Stuff: Fan-freaking-tastic. Blu-ray looks and sounds brilliant.
Synopsis: The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

Final Verdict: A little long, but still awesome. I’m sure someone on your list wants it.

Horton Hears a Who! (4 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ December 9, 2008

What It’s About: An adorable retelling of the Dr. Seuss classic with a lovely message: A person’s a person, no matter how small. Featuring the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, this animated flick oozes charm. The animation is gorg and the story is funny and endearing. There is something for the adults and the kiddies here—the best kind of animated flick.
Technical Stuff: I am so spoiled now that I have Blu-Ray and regular dvds just don’t look that purty, especially the Fox screeners. It looks decent and sounds decent and I’m sure the final copy is even better but I say get the Blu-Ray.
Synopsis: One of Dr. Seuss' most beloved stories roars to life as never before in this enormous animated adventure that proves "a person's a person no matter how small."
A playful pachyderm named Horton becomes a reluctant hero when he discovers the microscopic city of Who-ville on a floating speck of dust and embarks on a hilarious adventure to save the town from the dangers of the jungle. Featuring a who's who of superstar voice talent, including Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett, this heartwarming hit comedy delivers loads of laughs and tons of fun for the whole family!

Lost: Season Four- Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ December 9, 2008

What It’s About: Thank God it got back on track. This is one exhausting show to watch. Now that we know it’s ending in 2010, there is a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. Sure, you still don’t really learn anything new and there are too many flashbacks and flash forwards to count, but at least it’s not like it was in Season Two, which was BORING. Season Four was fascinating and I can’t wait for Season 5. Please don’t buy this for someone who isn’t a fan, the must start from Season One. No question.
Technical Stuff: Wow. This show looks amazing in Blu-Ray. It also sounds killer. I’m seriously impressed.
Synopsis: Immerse yourself in the boldest show on television with every mysterious twist and turn of Lost's addictive Fourth Season. Exploding with excitement and never-before-seen extras, Lost reaches new heights on Blu-ray. More than three months after their fateful crash, the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 will discover that the only thing more dangerous than the island might be the people who have come to rescue them. Dive deep into this captivating 5-disc Blu-ray box set, complete with original flashbacks, mind-bending flash-forwards and an astonishing world of exclusive bonus features. Experience one of the most groundbreaking shows in television history and "let Lost remind you of how spectacular scripted network programming can be," says USA Today.
Includes all 13 episodes from The Complete Fourth Season of Lost!

Extras? Blu-ray Disc Features: 5-Blu-ray Disc Box Set Anamorphic Widescreen - 1.78 Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround - English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo - English Additional Release Material: Behind the Scenes - 1. LOST On Location - Go Behind-The-Scenes With the Cast and Crew Featurettes - 1. LOST Flashbacks - All-New, Never-Before-Seen Flashbacks 2. Transforming Hawaii - How Hawaii is Transformed into the World of LOST Additional Product: Collectible Booklet - Exclusive Oceanic Airlines Safety Guide
Final Verdict: Lost is back! And here’s hoping it just gets better…

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian- Blu-Ray (2 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ December 2, 2008

What It’s About: Holy moly, is this movie ever dark. What happened to having a funny animal sidekick? In this sequel to The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the kids are a little older but Narnia has seen hundreds of years pass by. The animals aren’t cute and fluffy, they all want to kill you!
It’s not very fun and doesn’t even seem very epic (just very long). Although the technicals kept me entertained, the film sadly, did not. I wonder if the third will be any better?
Technical Stuff: This is why I love Blu-Ray. It’s all phenomenal. The colours are amazing and the detail is extraordinary.
Synopsis: The magical world of C.S. Lewis' beloved fantasy comes to life once again in Prince Caspian, the second installment of The Chronicles of Narnia series. Join Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy, the mighty and majestic Aslan, friendly new Narnian creatures and Prince Caspian as they lead the Narnians on a remarkable journey to restore peace and glory to their enchanted land. Continuing the adventure of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with more magic and a brand-new hero, Prince Caspian is a triumph of imagination, courage, love, joy and humor your whole family will want to watch again and again.
Extras? Blu-ray Disc Features: Anamorphic Widescreen Audio: 7.1 Uncompressed 48kHz/24bit - English Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround - French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround - Spanish Disc 1: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN Additional Release Material: Audio Commentary - Andrew Adamson - Director; Stars Interactive Features: Circle-Vision Interactive: Creating The Castle Raid BD-Live Disc 2: Bonus Disc Additional Release Material: Bloopers of NARNIA Deleted Scenes Featurette - 1. Inside Narnia: The Adventure Returns 2. Sets of Narnia: A Classic Comes to Life 3. Big Movie Comes to a Small Town 4. Previsualizing Narnia 5. Talking Animals and Walking Trees: The Magical World of Narnia 6. Secrets of the Duel 7. Becoming Trumpkin 8. Warwick Davis: The Man Behind Nikabrik
Final Verdict: I know I’m down on it, but it’s just nowhere as good as the first movie was.

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2 (4 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros/ November 18, 2008

What It’s About: The first Sisterhood movie was great. And as with most sequels, the second isn’t as good. But it’s still surprisingly enjoyable. I think what causes it to suffer is that the girls aren’t actually together. They’re split up and have few scenes together. It was the chemistry of the cast that worked so well in the first place.
The last bit of the film, when they’re reunited is fun. And it’s really hard to watch Blake Lively and not see Serena now. Just a thought. My fave is Alexis Bledel but America Ferrera won me over big-time in this movie. Sure, it’s a bit of a cheese-fest, but bring on part 3—I’ll watch it.
Technical Stuff: Beautiful picture and good sound. The scenes in Santorini in particular make me drool.
Synopsis: Join the four best friends as they finish their first year at college and dive into a summer of excitement. Bridget (Blake Lively) journeys to Turkey on an archeological dig. Carmen (America Ferrera) plugs into the hectic, creative world of summer theater in Vermont. Lena (Alexis Bledel) discovers new love and old heartbreak at the Rhode Island School of Design. And in the Big Apple, Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) takes a big step in her relationship with Brian.
Romance, laughs, tears and that pair of jeans that keeps the girls together even when they're far apart -- all are here in a heart-lifting second film based on Ann Brashares' bestsellers. It's a perfect fit!

Extras? Go Jump Off a Cliff: How the Exhilarating Final Sequence - Not Originally in the script -was inspired by fan reaction to the first movie; ; Additional scenes; Gag reel: On-set bloopers and Jokes
Final Verdict: Not as fun as the original but still very enjoyable.

Beverly Hills 90210: The Sixth Season (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ November 25, 2008

What It’s About: 90210 started to g downhill after Season Five, not that that would have stopped me or other die-hard fans from tuning in every week. The sixth season is best-known for being the one where Kelly gets hooked on drugs (oh no!)
The other major storylines here are Donna (who is looking like she was ridden hard and put away wet) gets abused by Ray and Dylan has a fake marriage. Oh, and a porno is filmed at Brandon’s house (tee-hee). It’s still a satisfying season to watch although the changed music still bugs me. And why no extras? They’re going to make me buy all the season on Blu-Ray in a couple of years, aren’t they?
Technical Stuff: Not bad, not fab. It’s full screen with English Stereo sound but what did you want from 1995?
Synopsis: The friends of Beverly Hills, 90210 are just getting warmed up! Join Brandon (Jason Priestley), Dylan (Luke Perry), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green), Steve (Ian Ziering), Val (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen), and Clare (Kathleen Robertson) as they discover new love, battle addictions, and test the waters outside the college campus in all 31 sizzling episode of 1995-6's Season 6. Witness Kelly's terrifying descent into drugs; Dylan's unlikely marriage proposal; and a porno that is filmed at Brandon's house! As their lives twist, turn, and bend in different directions, it's the bonds of friendship that will never break.
Extras? none
Final Verdict: Still a fun season, even if just to make fun of…

Tropic Thunder: Director’s Cut (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ November 18, 2008

What It’s About: From the moment I first saw the trailers for this movie I was excited. I love Robert Downey JR. and Ben Stiller makes me giggle. They don’t disappoint in this comedy about a big-budget war movie gone wrong. But I have to admit the person I loved most in the film who I hate in everything else ever, was Tom Cruise. Seriously.

It’s probably because he’s almost unrecognizable. But he is freaking hilarious. The entire movie is a blast. You all know the premise by now and of course RDJ is great as the white actor playing a black man, and Stiller does what he does best. Weak link? I’d go with Jack Black who just isn’t the same calibre as his castmates but still worth a snort or two. This is one I’m putting aside for when I go into labour and need those endorphins. And that high praise indeed.
Technical Stuff: Both sound and picture are solid although some of the night scenes had minor noise. Dialogue and loud effects are both crystal.
Synopsis: Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. lead an ensemble cast in Tropic Thunder, an action comedy about a group of self-absorbed actors who set out to make the most expensive war film. After ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they enoucter real bad guys.
Extras? Closed Caption; ; Disc 1 - Filmmaker and Cast Commentaries; ; Disc 2 - Before the Thunder; The Hot LZ; Blowing S#%t Up; Designing the Thunder; The Cast of Tropic Thunder; Rain of Madness; Dispatches from the Edge of Madness; Deleted and Extended Scenes; Alternate Ending; MTV Movie Awards - Tropic Thunder; Full Mags; Video Rehearsals
Final Verdict: Really funny and quite smart. Rare combo in a comedy.

Band of Brothers: Blu-Ray (5 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros/ November 11, 2008

What It’s About: Every year, November 11th hits and I feel like I can’t do enough to say thank you to our veterans and those currently keeping peace. Then I watch something like this series and feel even more inadequate. As you watch Band of Brothers, please keep in mind that people actually went thought this, lived through this. It’s just incredible. As is this box set.
This is simply an amazing series. HBO has bragged that this was their best selling TV series on DVD and I have a feeling it’s about to get even better with this stunning set. It’s packed and even those of you that bought the original—if you have Blu-Ray, I say it’s worth the upgrade.
Technical Stuff: The picture is simply astounding. The clarity is what Blu-Ray is all about. The detail will blow your mind. The sound is DTS HD and also is incredible. You feel like you’re in the middle of the action which is pretty frightening and powerful.
Synopsis: Based on the bestseller by Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers' journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. They were an elite rifle company parachuting into France early on D-Day morning, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and capturing Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. They were also a unit that suffered 150 percent causalities, and whose lives became legend.
Extras? Closed Caption; Dynamic, optional picture-in-picture commentary by the Easy Company veterans titled In the Words of Easy Company; Interactive field guide, featuring timelines, maps, soldier profiles and much more titled In the Field With the Men of Easy Company 80-minute documentary "We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company"; 30-minute "Making of Band of Brothers" featurette; The Premiere in Normandy
Final Verdict: I know a few people who would love to get this for Christmas. The package is amazing and the show is even better.

The L-Word: Five Season Set (5 out of 5 stars)
Showtime/ October 28, 2008
What It’s About:
It’s Holiday Gift Guide time! So here is an awesome idea for someone you really really like (‘cause it ain’t cheap baby). All five seasons of the super fun lesbian drama The L-Word. I have no idea where this airs here in Canada and had never seen an episode but got pretty hooked on this set. You get all five seasons with all the extras that came along with them. It retails for about $150 but it’s hours of entertainment. And this show is much more fun than I ever thought.
I always envisioned it as some sort of super serious drama that I wouldn’t be able to relate to but found myself enthralled with the characters and stories. Oh screw it, buy it for yourself!
Technical Stuff: Progressively the picture looks better and it’s stellar on the fifth season. Most is filmed in high-def. The sound is a solid 5.1.
Synopsis: "Set in the chic world of Los Angeles, this humor-laced dramatic series explores the lives of a group of lesbians, their friends, family and neighbors. The series takes a smart, sexy and fun look at the hopes, dreams and lives of these people as they deal with things like career struggles, relationship issues and the pressures of trying to start a family. The show provides a fresh look at everyday life, told with passion, frankness and humor.

The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration Blu-Ray (5 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ September 23, 2008
What It’s About:
There really isn’t much I can say about The Godfather Collection that hasn’t been already said. It came out on Blu-Ray in September but I’m putting it in now because it is the ultimate Christmas gift. Seriously. Someone you know will be getting a Blu-Ray player this year and this is the best set for a film buff.
It looks amazing and the extras are sick. Seriously, this thing is packed, yo.
Technical Stuff: The picture is amazing. Blacks are richer, the grain is as intended, the brownish yellow tones look as if they came straight from memory. The films come in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and in their original mono tracks, and a True HD 5.1 surround, excepting the more modern Part III, which just comes in True HD.
Synopsis: With legendary director Francis Ford Coppola at the helm and spectacular performers filling every role, THE GODFATHER series churned out three of the best-loved and most critically-acclaimed films of all time. THE GODFATHER: THE COPPOLA RESTORATION includes each of these three masterpieces.
THE GODFATHER: Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.
THE GODFATHER - PART II: This brilliant companion piece to the original THE GODFATHER continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Director Francis Ford Coppola tells two stories in PART II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. Reassembling many of the talents who helped make THE GODFATHER, Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision, and undeniably the best sequel ever made. Robert De Niro won an Oscar; the film received six Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1974.
THE GODFATHER - PART III: One of the greatest sagas in movie history continues. In this third film in the epic Corleone trilogy, Al Pacino reprises the role of powerful family leader Michael Corleone. Now in his 60's, Michael is dominated by two passions: freeing his family from crime and finding a suitable successor. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)...but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. Francis Ford Coppola directs Pacino, Garcia, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Eli Wallach, Sofia Coppola, Joe Mantegna and others in this exciting, long-awaited film that masterfully explores the themes of power, tradition, revenge and love. Seven Academy Award nominations for 1990 were the result, including Best Picture.

How I Met Your Mother: Season Three (4 out of 5 stars)
Sony/ October 7, 2008
What It’s About:
Of course the big news with this set are the episodes with Britney Spears. This was brilliant casting on both parts and she really did a great job. But what’s most important is that her appearance probably turned a bunch of people onto the show who didn’t watch itr before. I used to catch the occasional episode but this season was pretty hilarious. And it’s not because of Britney but because of Neil Patrick Harris who is brilliant as Barney.
This season has some really fun episodes including Barney getting The Yips and Marshall and Lily buying a crooked apartment. It’s a really funny show that stands up well to repeated viewing.
Technical Stuff: The picture comes in 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color. The picture quality is average. It has a relatively clean picture with minor color distortions and noticeable compression artifacts. The sound comes through in English 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound. The track is dialogue driven and audible throughout the presentation. There are also subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.
Synopsis: Friends minus one. The series is narrated through flashbacks from the future about the five friends and their dating misadventures.
This three disc collection includes all 20 episodes from Season Three of How I Met Your Mother!

Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition (5 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ October 7, 2008
What It’s About:
This was my favourite Disney movie growing up. I’m not sure what this says about me as it’s probably the darkest of the princess movies, but I could just watch it over and over. Everyone knows the story—Princess Aurora is cursed by the evil Maleficent on her baptism day. One of the good fairies changes the curse to sleeping instead of dying and a prince will have to find her and kiss her.
It’s sort of an adult film I think, more than the previous work. Sure, kids would love it but adults would be able to relate and get into the story—something that’s continued with other quality Disney movies.
Technical Stuff: This is the stuff you want to know about since you probably already own it. This Sleeping Beauty is brighter and WIDER. That’s right people—we’re getting some side views we’ve never had before. And it really does add to the magic. The colour is rich and bold, and you can really see a difference from the last release.
The sound is a fantastic 5.1 that is way better than the last version and much clearer and crisper. Of course, there is an original track for you purists out there (suckers).
Synopsis: Awaken your senses to the majesty of Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney's ultimate fairy tale. See more than you've ever seen before through the magic of state-of-the-art technology and experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance, in the way Walt envisioned it -- pristine, beautiful, utterly breathtaking. From the grand celebration of Princess Aurora's birth to the fateful day when she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and falls under Malificent's evil curse to Prince Philip's courageous battle against a fire-breathing dragon, the stunning artistry and spine-tingling sounds will transform your home into a fantastic world. The adventures continue as you are immersed into a wonderful world of bonus features.
Extras? Sound: 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix
Subtitled: English SDH, Spanish, French
Never-Before-Seen Alternate Opening; All-New Game: "Briar Rose's Waltz"; All-New Music Video; All-New Making Of Sleeping Beauty Featurette; Deleted Songs
Final Verdict: Worth the upgrade? Yup.
