Waitress (4 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ November 27, 2007

What It’s About: The back story of Waitress can’t be ignored when looking at the film. It’s the movie Adrienne Shelley made right before she was murdered by a construction worker. She is so great in here and so charming. But I have to admit the real star of the film is Jenna (Keri Russell). Who knew she could do comedy? She has a wonderful light touch and impeccable timing. Her scenes with Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion) are to die for. Both are great and the whole movie is like one of Jenna’s pies: sweet yet melancholy.
Technical Stuff: Another Fox screener at play here. Looks okay, not great but who knows what the final one is like. The sound is very quiet and again, don’t know if that’s the screener’s fault or just a weak 5.1.
Synopsis: Don't miss writer/director Adrienne Shelly's sweet, sassy comedy about the power of friendship, motherhood and second chances, starring the radiant Keri Russell who serves up "a hilarious and heartfelt performance" (Rolling Stone).
Extras? This Is How We Made Waitress Pie featurette; Commentary with producer Michael Roiff and actor Keri Russell; Written and Directed by Adrienne Shelly: A Memorial featurette; "Hi, I'm Keri, Your Waitress" featurette; The Pies Have It featurette; Fox Movie Channel Presents In Character With Keri Russell - Cheryl Hines - Nathan Fillion
Final Verdict: A sweet and funny movie that’s a definite chick flick. And you will seriously crave pie afterward.

Live Free or Die Hard (5 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ November 27, 2007

What It’s About: I have to say, Live Free or Die Hard was my favourite movie of the summer. It was so incredibly entertaining I recommended it to everyone I knew, including my parents.
It stars Bruce Willis (who I only like in these movies) and Justin Long (the dorky MAC guy). They actually have great chemistry and play off each other well. There are some amazing action sequences and some hilarious lines. The Unrated version includes several F-bombs and some blood. Whoo.
Technical Stuff: The screening copy provided by Fox had terrible quality with crazy pixellation. I’m assuming the final version doesn’t look like that. The sound is excellent with a powerful Dolby Digital 5.1 track.
Synopsis: "The best of the best is back and better than ever" (WNYW-TV) in the latest installment of the pulse-pounding, thrill-a-minute Die Hard action films. New York City detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) delivers old-school justice to a new breed of terrorists when a massive computer attack on the U.S. infrastructure threatens to shut down the entire country over Independence Day weekend.
Extras? The collector’s edition:
Disc One: ; Unrated and original theatrical verison of Live Free or Die Hard; Audio commentary by Bruce Willis, director Len Wiseman and editor Nicolas De Toth; ; Disc Two: ; Analog Hero in a Digital World: All-new documentary on the making of Live Free or Die Hard; Yippee Ki Yay, Motherf*****: Bruce Willis/Kevin Smith interview; Fox Movie Channel presents Fox Legacy; Original theatrical trailer; Music video: "Die Hard" performed by Guyz Nite; Behind the scenes with Guyz Nite featurette
Final Verdict: Fan-freaking-tastic! Loved the action, the comedy and the characters. Woot!

The Santa Clause 3 (3 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ November 20, 2007

What It’s About: Another Santa Clause. Really? That Tim Allen guy—there was a time when he was popular wasn’t there? It’s hard to remember his glory days as he’s spouting off recycled joke after recycled joke (um, Canadians say “eh”).
There are a few funny moments but for the most part this is one to save for the kiddies and a Blockbuster night.
Technical Stuff: Sound and picture are excellent as always with Disney. It’s bad it’s all sort of wasted of such a mediocre film.
Synopsis: Holiday magic mixes with comical chaos at the North Pole in The Santa Clause 3. Tim Allen reprises his role as Scott Calvin - AKA Santa - as he juggles a full house of family and the mischievous Jack Frost (Martin Short), who is trying to take over the "big guy's" holiday.
At the risk of giving away the secret location of the North Pole, Scott invites his in-laws (Ann-Margret and Alan Arkin) to share in the holiday festivities, and upcoming birth of baby Claus with expectant wife, Carol - AKA Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell).
Along for the adventure are Scott's extended family, son Charlie (Eric Lloyd), ex-wife Laura Miller (Wendy Crewson), her husband, Neil Miller (Judge Reinhold) and their daughter, Lucy (Liliana Mumy) who together with head elf Curtis (Spencer Breslin), foil Jack Frost's crafty scheme to control the North Pole.

Extras? Blooper reel; Alternate opening; Jack Frost & Mrs. Claus: a very different look; The new comedians: on the set with Tim & Marty; Audio commentary - with director Michael Lembeck; Creating movie magic: visual effects secrets, from the hallf of snow globes to Santa's fireplace; Christmas carol-oke: Sing your favorite songs of the season; Music video - "Greatest Time of Year" with Aly & AJ
Final Verdict: It’s a rental. Nothing too great happens in this movie. I mean—reindeer fart and that’s a highlight? Yikes.

Shrek the Third (3 out of 5 stars)
DreamWorks/ November 13, 2007

What It’s About: Oh Shrek. Once you were a clever and unique character/ film that I and millions of viewers delighted in. What have you become. Well, for starters, not so funny.
That’s not to say Shrek the Third doesn’t have its moments—it certainly does. But for the most part the film is a bit of a snoozer. The best part is the four sidekick princesses with stelaar voices: Amy Poehler (Snow White), Cheri Oteri (Sleeping Beauty), Amy Sedaris (Cinderella) and Maya Rudolph (Rapunzel). I would kill to see Pelher in her own film with this character as a bitchy Snow White is just Hilar. Oh, and the whole Justin Timberlake hoopla? Wasted. All he does is whine in his role in a not so likeable character. The film has a few great gags, and is stunningly animated, but overall pales in comparison to the first film.
Technical Stuff: The movie is stunning to look at. There is no argument there. In fact, it’s probably its strongest point. Vivid colour, amazing detail and an absolutely spotless transfer. The sound is also stellar with Dolby Digital; English 5.1 Surround; English 2.0 Surround; French 5.1 Surround; Spanish 2.0 Surround; English Subtitles; French Subtitles; Spanish Subtitles; and French Bi-lingual (Canada).
Synopsis: When Shrek (Mike Myers) married Fiona (Cameron Diaz) the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King of Far, Far Away however, when Shrek's father-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, that is exactly what he becomes. Recruiting Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss 'n Boots (Antonio Banderas) for a new quest, Shrek sets out to bring back the rightful heir to the throne. Meanwhile back in the kingdom, Fiona's jilted Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) storms the city with an army of fairytale villains to seize the throne. Fiona and a band of princesses must stop him to ensure there will be a kingdom left to rule!
Extras?
Shrek's Guide to Parenthood
• Meet the Cast
• Lost Scenes of SHREK THE THIRD
• Tech of SHREK THE THIRD
• Donkey Dance
• Big Green Goofs
• Worcestershire Academy Yearbook
DreamWorks Kids:
• Merlin’s Magic Crystal Ball
• Learn the Donkey Dance
• How to be Green
• SHREK Shmash Ups
• Royal Tournament Games

Final Verdict: It’s still the sweet and loveable Shrek but he’s lost some punch. Worth watching though just for the princesses.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (3 out of 5 stars)
Universal/ November 6, 2007

What It’s About: I love comedies. I’ll watch them even when I know they’re going to be kinda crappy. So here is the case with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. It’s okay. It’s not particularly bad or particularly great. It’s a solid rental for your Saturday date night.
The weird thing about it though that bugged me is that it’s full of homophobic jokes, tons and tons, and then at the end tries to preach about the importance of tolerance. Um. Okay. It’s just weird. It’s full of fart and boob jokes and just hard to take seriously. Which I guess you’re not supposed to do…or are you? Isn’t there a moral here? I have a farking headache now.
Technical Stuff: Picture is perfect and sound is also divine. I love new movies. Optional Spanish and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks are included, as are optional English, Spanish and French subtitles.
Synopsis: Adam Sandler (Click) and Kevin James (Hitch) team as two straight guys who stumble down the aisle with the best of intentions in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Chuck Levine (Sandler) and Larry Valentine (James) are the pride of their fire station: two guy's guys always side-by-side and willing to do anything for each other. Salt-of-the-earth widower Larry wants just one thing: to protect his family. His buddy Chuck also wants one thing: to enjoy the single life.
Grateful Chuck owes Larry for saving his life in a fire, and Larry calls in that favor big time when civic red tape prevents him from naming his own two kids as his life insurance beneficiaries. All that Chuck has to do is claim to be Larry's domestic partner on some city forms. Easy. Nobody will ever know.
But when an overzealous, spot-checking bereaucrat (Jessica Biel) becomes suspicious, the new couple's arrangement becomes a citywide issue and goes from confidential to front page news. Forced to improvise as love-struck newlyweds, Chuck and Larry must now fumble through a hilarious charade of domestic bliss under one roof. After surviving their mandatory honeymoon and dodging the threat of exposure, the well-intentioned con men discover that sticking together in your time of need is what truly makes a family.
Extras? Outrageous deleted scenes!; Laughing is contagious: Hysterical outtakes and funny moments with the cast!; I now pronounce you husband and...husband? - Go behind the scenes with the cast as they reveal their favorite moments from the film; Look who stopped by:; Adam and Kevin reflect on the hilarious actors who did cameos; Stop, drop and roll: Join the stars of the film as they explain how the dangeriou stunts were performed!; And more!

Final Verdict: A lame but at times funny comedy. Adam Sandler…what is happening to you?

Evan Almighty (4 out of 5 stars)
Universal/ October 9, 2007

What It’s About: There was a lot of stuff said about Evan Almighty when it came out into theatres. People complained that it wasn’t funny, that it wasn’t unique and that it was cheesy. I beg to differ. It’s intended audience is parents, older people in general and the young ‘uns. And they love it. Trust me, I showed it to a group of grade nines and they laughed their heads off.
Steve Carell does a wonderful job as Evan, the new senator that gets a visit from God after he prays for help to “change the world.” God (Morgan Freeman) decides Evan is the next Noah and tells him to start building an ark. Obviously this doesn’t go over very well at first and leads to predictable hilarity including monkeys holding hammers. The movie is sweet and has a wonderful lesson. So I’m making my own bandwagon on this one saying Evan Almighty is exactly the movie it was meant to be.
One last amazing thing. The DVD comes in a new “green case” using environmentally friendly products and processes, much like An Inconvenient Truth did. Love this and hope other studios follow.
Technical Stuff: Excellent audio and video here with a lovely picture with only a teensy bit of edge enhancement and the 5.1 Dollby Digital track works quite well for the mostly dialogue-driven film.
Synopsis: From the director of Bruce Almighty comes "a comedy you don't want to miss" (Kim Griffis, NBC-TV)! Everyone's favorite funnyman Steve Carell is at his hilarious best as junior congressman Evan Baxter, whose wish to "change the world" is heard by none other than God (Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman). When God appears with the perplexing request to build an ark, Evan is sure he is losing it. But soon mysterious deliveries of wood and tools are being dropped on his doorstep, animals of every shape and size are flocking to him two by two, and his self absorbed life goes from overnight success to almighty mess! It's "a great time for everyone" (Pete Hammond, Maxim)!
Extras?
Deleted scenes; Outtakes; Animals on Set Two by Two; Animal Roundup Game; Steve Carell Unscripted; The Ark-itects of Noah's Ark
Final Verdict: A funny and sweet movie—better than Bruce Almighty and worth a watch as long as you’re not expecting The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Princess Bride: 20th Anniversary Edition (3 out of 5 stars)
MGM/ November 13, 2007

What It’s About: I hve been waiting anxiously for a beautiful new edition of one of my favourite movies ever. As you wish? Sort of…
The movie has had four(!) releases in the past seven years. So is there really anything amazing they could have done here? The transfer is great, and the sound is a beauty but the bonus features? Sigh…the bonus features…kinda suck. The previous editions (especially the 2001) had a great array of commentaries, etc. So you would think they would all be included here along with new stuff. Noppers. You get some new things that aren’t that great (see below) and none of the old stuff is here. Crap-ola.
Technical Stuff: Can’t complain about the transfer and the sound. Both are the best yet.
Synopsis: From celebrated director Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally) and Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman (Chaplin) comes "an enchanting fantasy" (Time) filled with adventure, romance and plenty of "good-hearted fun" (Roger Ebert)! Featuring a spectacular cast that includes Robin Wright (Forrest Gump), Cary Elwes (Liar, Liar), Mandy Patinkin (Dick Tracy), and Billy Crystal (City Slickers), this wonderful fairy tale about a princess named Buttercup and her beloved is a "real dream of a movie!" (People).
Extras?
True Love and High Adventure: The Official Princess Bride DVD Video Game
Princess Bride: The Untold Tales Featurette
The Art of Fencing Featurette
Fairytales and Folklore Featurette
Final Verdict: Overall, the new features and slightly better transfer and sound from 2002’s release aren’t worth a new purchase.

Twin Peaks: The Definitive Gold Box Edition (5 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ October 30, 2007

What It’s About: This is one messed up show. It only lasted 29 episodes but in that time it way able to hook a huge audience. I was in Grade eight at the times and everyone wanted Laura Palmer’s Diary for Christmas. Only because it had dirty parts. Seriously.
I wasn’t allowed to watch it so DVD is the first time I’ve been exposed to this weirdness. And I don’t know. I don’t think I get it. But there are plenty of people who do and they will snap up this set which includes both seasons and a plethora of special extras.
Technical Stuff: The picture looks darn great. The backgrounds are solid and the colours come out nicely. Print damage has been eliminated and everything looks great.
The sound is an English language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound with an optional 2.0 Stereo track also included as well as alternate language dub Spanish and Portuguese Dolby Digital Mono mixes. Subtitles, optional of course, are provided in English, Spanish and Portuguese. There is no DTS which kind of sucks but the 5.1 does a great job so I can’t complain too much.
Synopsis: From three-time Academy Award nominee for directing, David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive), and Mark Frost comes the wildly imaginative, darkly comic murder mystery-thriller series that is one of the most acclaimed events in television history, Twin Peaks...Here are all 29 episodes, fully remastered from the original negative, with all-new 5.1 sound.
Extras? The set really shines here!
All 29 episodes plus the original pilot (both U.S. Network and International versions) on 10 discs
Remastered picture from the original negative with 5.1 surround sound; original broadcast 2.0 audio
Deleted scenes
"A Slice of Lynch" featurette (featuring David Lynch, Kyle MacLachlan, and Mädchen Amick)
Exclusive feature length documentary in four parts: "Secrets from Another Place: Return to Twin Peaks," which features: "Northwest Passage: Creating the Pilot"; "Freshly Squeezed: Creating Season One"; "Where We're From: Creating the Music"; and "Into the Night: Creating Season Two"
Interactive map of Twin Peaks
The complete Log Lady introductions
Saturday Night Live: Kyle MacLachlan’s monologue and the Twin Peaks comedy sketch
The "Falling" music video with Julee Cruise
"Return to Twin Peaks" featurette follows a group of devoted fans to the 2006 Twin Peaks Festival
"Greetings from Twin Peaks" collectable postcards
Richard Beymer behind-the-scenes photo gallery
Original network promo spots
Final Verdict: A must-have for fans of the show. But be warned—I’m sure they’ll come out with a definitive version in a few years and this bad boy is expensive. So maybe it’s a great Christmas gift!
