Bridge
to Terabithia (4 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ June 19, 2007
What It’s About:
Based on the hugely popular and Newberry-Award winning novel, Bridge
to Terabithia will certainly please fans but may not completely
sway newcomers.
The great thing about the story was always that it didn't exist
in an alternate universe but in the woods across the way from the
character's houses. The magic happens in the kids' imaginations,
not in an alternate universe like Narnia. It's a wonderful story
and one that will make you bawl.
Technical Stuff: Disney always does the best job
with their dvds. It's picture-perfect, both transfer and the 5.1
mix. Audio tracks and subtitles are available in English, Spanish
and French.
Synopsis: Based on Katherine Paterson’s Newbery
Award-winning novel, Bridge to Terabithia recounts the heartwarming
tale of kids who stumble upon the fantasy kingdom Terabithia, where
they face the challenges of childhood and learn that friendship
is life’s one true reward. Jess Aarons—played by Josh
Hutcherson (“RV”)—a shy, artistic 5th grade boy,
is the fastest runner in school until new girl in town, outgoing
Leslie Burke (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” star
AnnaSophia Robb), busts Jess’s speed record. The two eventually
form a friendship over their love of storytelling and discover that
the make-believe world they created has come to live in a secret
forest. Their adventures in Terabithia, where they are crowned king
and queen, help them face the challenges of growing up.

Breach
(4 out of 5 stars)
Universal/ June 12, 2007
What It’s About:
Ever since Ryan Phillippe cheated on Reese Witherspoon, I can't
watch him in a movie. Kinda like Tom Cruise is crazy and I can't
stand the sight of him. Anywho, I forced myself to sit through Breach
and despite Phillippe's annoying presence found the movie to be
quite intelligent.
Entertaining though? Not so much. It's quite dry and slow in places.
It has received great reviews due to the smart dialogue and plot
points and the fact that it's based on a true story holds some interest
as well.
Technical Stuff: The video transfer here isn't
all that impressive. It's a little soft and has some definite edge
enhancement. The sound is completely dialogue and the 5.1 works
just fine.
Synopsis: Inspired by the incredible true story of the greatest
security breach in U.S. intelligence history, Breach is a spellbinding
thriller starring Academy Award winner Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe,
Academy Award nominee Laura Linney and Dennis Haysbert. Eric O'Neill
(Phillippe) is assigned to work with renowned operative Robert Hanssen
(Cooper), the sole subject of a long-term, top-secret investigation.
Determined to draw this suspected double-agent out of deep cover,
O'Neill finds himself in a lethal game of spy vs. spy, where nothing
is as it seems. Critics are hailing Breach as "electrifying"
(Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) and "suspenseful" (Ty Burr,
The Boston Globe).
Extras?
Commentary from FBI Agent Eric O'Neill and writer/director Billy
Ray,
8 deleted scenes and 2 alternate scenes with commentary from writer/director
Billy Ray and editor Jeffrey Ford,
"Breaching the Truth" featurette,
"The Mole" featurette (a feature on Hanssen that originally
aired on "Dateline NBC") "Anatomy of a Character"
featurette
Final Verdict: If you're looking for a light and
suspenseful evening, this isn't the movie for you but it remains
a recommended movie.

Ghost
Rider (2 out of 5 stars)
Sony Pictures/ June 12, 2007
What It’s About: Another
useless Nicolas Cage movie. Wasn’t there a time when he did
good movies? I like empty entertaining flicks and was hoping for
that here but instead I was exposed to a vapid, predictable and
boring movie that could have been fantastic.
Comic book buffs will know the story of Johnny Blaze, who sold his
sold to the devil and is forced to ride around at night on a motorcycle,
giving people the smack down. Eva Mendez provides the eye candy
although I didn’t think she looked that good in here. Cage
is a goof and frankly, annoying. It’s an okay movie but not
a good, or particularly entertaining one.
Technical Stuff: The picture looks great as it
should for a new release and the audio comes in a nice deep DTS
that’s balanced nicely.
Synopsis: His curse became his power.
Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) was only a teenaged stunt biker when
he sold his soul to the devil (Peter Fonda). Years later, Johnny
is a world-renowned daredevil by day, but at night, he becomes the
Ghost Rider of Marvel Comics legend. The devil's bounty hunter,
he is charged with finding evil souls on earth and bringing them
to hell. But when a twist of fate brings Johnny's long-lost love
(Eve Mendes) back into his life, Johnny realizes he just might have
a second chance at happiness - if he can bear the devil and win
back his soul. To do so he'll have to defeat Blackheart (Wes Bentley),
the devil's nemesis and wayward son, whose plot to take over his
father's realm will bring hell on earth - unless Ghost Rider can
stop him.

Die
Hard Collection (4 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ June 19, 2007
What It’s About:
Everyone's seen Die Hard. Even me. So there isn't much for me to
talk about with this review except the fact that the movies are
awesome and exactly how action movies should be—not taking
themselves too seriously.
Fox has released this new collection in time for the release of
Live Free or Die Hard (which I have seen and is fan-freakin-tastic).
The set doesn't offer anything too exciting for those who already
own the three movies except for a preview disc of the new one.
Technical Stuff: All the movies look great but
they could look better. There is some dirt and debris on the transfers.
The sound is available in DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1 and English or
French 2.0 and doesn't disappoint.
Synopsis: Die Hard Synopsis:
In the high-rise, high-stakes action thriller that raised the bar
for the genre, superstar Bruce Willis rocks as New York City Detective
John McClane, who’s in Los Angeles to spend the holidays with
his estranged wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). But while McClane waits
for Holly’s office party to end, terrorists take control of
the building. As their sinister leader, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman),
and his savage henchman (Alexander Godunov), round up hostages,
McClane gets ready to blast a few rounds of his own and launch a
one-man war – as only McClane can!
Die Hard 2: Die Harder Synopsis:
What is it about John McClane and the holidays?! Here it is, Christmas
Eve, and McClane (Bruce Willis returning to his iconic film role)
is off duty in the nation’s capital. But a team of terrorists,
in town to rescue a drug lord from justice, has taken over a major
international airport, holding thousands of travelers hostage. Amidst
a blinding blizzard, McClane must race against time to defeat the
terrorists and their murderous leader (William Sadler). And if that’s
not a big enough lump of coal in his stocking, he’s also contending
with an inept airport police chief (Dennis Franz), the stubborn
head of the army’s anti-terrorist squad, and the knowledge
that his wife (Bonnie Bedelia) is trapped in a plane desperately
low on fuel, circling overhead!
Die Hard With A Vengeance Synopsis:
Exploding with special effects, unexpected comedy and nonstop thrills,
the third chapter of the hugely successful Die Hard series reteams
film legend Bruce Willis with talented action director John McTiernan.
New York cop John McClane (Willis) just can't seem to relax. Now
he's the personal target of the mysterious Simon (Jeremy Irons),
a terrorist determined to blow up the entire city if he doesn't
get what he wants. Accompanied by an unwilling civilian (Samuel
L. Jackson), McClane careens wildly from one end of town to the
other as he struggles to keep up with Simon's deadly game. It's
a battle of wits between a psychopathic genius and a heroic cop
in this thrill-a-minute adventure that grabs you and doesn't let
go!

Rescue
Me: The Complete Third Season (5 out of 5 stars)
Sony Pictures/ June 5, 2007
What It’s About: A
hugely original show starring Dennis Leary as a jaded firefighter.
It’s a gritty show that can the capabilities to offend some
viewers if not taken as a whole. If you haven’t seen it yet,
pick up all three seasons and settle in for a great marathon.
You need to watch it in order to appreciate it fully and I love
the comedic aspects here as well. And of course, I can’t help
but mention Marisa Tomei, who I adore and wish would come back to
movies.
Technical Stuff: The picture is awesome for a cable
show although not quite HD quality. The sound is a fabulous Dolby
Digital 5.1 mix that makes the action scenes really pop.
Synopsis: In this acclaimed TV dramedy, comedian
Denis Leary plays Tommy Gavin, a New York fireman coping with the
events of 9/11 and his own personal demons: drinking, a painful
separation from his wife, and visions of his dead cousin. The other
firefighters at 62 Truck aren't faring much better. Chief Reilly
has a compulsive gambling addiction, ladies'-man Franco Rivera lives
life fast and dangerous, and "Lou" Shea simmers with bottled-up
frustrations. Season three picks up after the death of Tommy's young
son at the end of the last season, endangering his already tenuous
relationship with his wife. His extended family isn't making his
life any easier, with his uncle (Lenny Clarke) in prison and his
father (Charles Durning) in poor health. Tommy seeks solace in the
arms of his brother's ex-wife (Oscar winner Marisa Tomei) and his
late cousin's widow (Callie Thorne). This season also features guest
appearances from Academy-Award-winning actresses Susan Sarandon
and Tatum O'Neal. Leary and Emmy-winning Peter Tolan (THE LARRY
SANDERS SHOW) write the gripping and darkly humorous show, which
resonates with Leary's real life--his cousin, a firefighter, died
in a tragic 1999 warehouse fire.

Coming
to America/ Trading Places: Special Collector’s Editions (5
out of 5 stars)
Paramount Pictures/ June 5, 2007
What It’s About:
Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s recent success in “Dreamgirls”
and new movie release of “Norbit,” it seems like the
perfect time to focus on some of his other classics. And oh—what’s
this? Looks like reissues of two of his most popular movies arrive
today in Special Collector's Editions.
These movies are ones that most people are familiar with, and ones
that make you laugh out loud. Murphy is at his best here, and these
editions truly are worth picking up. Both have vastly improved technical
specifications as well as a lovely array of bonus features.
Technical Stuff: Both movies look surprisingly
excellent in these new transfers. There is a little bit of dirt
and grain but these are movie form the 80’s and look fab.
The sound isn’t as great as the picture but it’s good
enough for these talkie films. At times dialogue sounds a little
tinny and weak, but still solid.
Synopsis: Two wealthy investors pit heredity against
environment when they switch the roles of a young preppie floor
trader and an uneducated street hustler.
An African prince decides that Queens, New York is the appropriate
place to search for a woman to share his throne.

Fantastic
Four: Extended Edition (3 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ June 5, 2007
What It’s About:
People complained about Fantastic Four, saying it was a bad version
of the comic and blah blah blah. Personally, I found it immensely
entertaining, despite some of the wooden acting and stupid dialogue.
So what’s extended about this?
The new extended edition makes the movie better. There is more character
development and some of the awkward editing has been smoothed out.
There are several new scenes that help the movie out a great deal.
Technical Stuff: Beautiful anamorphic widescreen
picture and very strong audio make the disc almost flawless!
Synopsis: Prepare for the all-new, action-packed
Fantastic Four 2-Disc Extended Edition.

Seinfeld:
Season Eight (5 out of 5 stars)
Sony Pictures/ June 5, 2007
What It’s About:
Larry David left his hugely successful series in this season, making
people wonder if the show could continue to be as hilarious as always.
Luckily for fans, it absolutely did, and even got stronger.
To be honest, I was never a Seinfeld fan, I guess it’s not
my type of humour. But as far as I know, this was an amazing season
for the show. The episodes that proved most successful here were
“The Bizarro Jerry,” “The English Patient,”
and “The Yada Yada.”
Technical Stuff: There is occasional grain but
the show has a great transfer onto DVD in its original aspect ratio
of 1.33:1. The sound is solid as well. The laugh track is nicely
balanced with the dialogue. A dubbed French 2.0 track is also there,
as are English closed captions and subtitles in French, Spanish,

Scrubs:
The Complete Fifth Season (5 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ May 22, 2007
What It’s About:
I'm a huge fan of Scrubs because of its originality and great cast.
Lat season was one of change and the fifth opens with the doctors
being residents, Eliot not at Sacred Heart, Turk and Carla trying
to get pregnant and Jordan (my fave) returning to work.
The season is a little shaky until the end of the first DVD, where
it gets back to great. Mandy Moore joins the cast and she's a welcome
jolt. Truthfully, J.D. can get annoyinSg. Still, she leaves and
she show can get a little stale seeming. But it's still one of the
funniest on television!
Technical Stuff: A great TV on DVD transfer and
the sound is a respectable 5.1 mix.
Synopsis: The quirky doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital
bring their bedside humor back to DVD with Scrubs - Season 5. In
this Emmy-nominated season, which aired from January to May 2006,
the zany cast of practical jokers -- J. D. (Zach Braff), Elliot
(Sarah Chalke), Turk (Donald Faison), Carla (Judy Reyes), and Dr.
Cox (John C. McGinley) -- make life-changing decisions. J.D. begins
a hot-and-heavy romance with his seemingly perfect match, while
Elliot gets fired from her fellowship position and must bribe Dr.
Kelso (Ken Jenkins) to get her job back. Dr. Cox and Jordan (Christa
Miller) find out she's pregnant and have to come to terms with working
together, while the Janitor (Neil Flynn) convinces J.D. to help
him move out of someone else's house. Also, Carla and Turk decide
to start a family, and Dr. Kelso shows off his youthful legs. Extras
include: an extended cut of the 100th episode, "My Way Home,"
directed by Braff; a featurette entitled "My 117 Episodes:

Apocalypto
(4 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ May 22, 2007
What It’s About:
I'm thinking Mel Gibson didn't get a lot of love during his childhood.
How else to explain his incessant need for violence in movies? Everything
you've heard about the gore level in this film is true and then
some.
Still it's hard not to notice the other levels at play in this movie,
like the excitement, detail and cinematography. But ultimately,
it's not as deep as it should be, and ends up playing out like a
chase movie that's quite pretty and very graphic.
Technical Stuff: Colour is lush and detail is crystal
clear in the picture while the sound comes in both DTS and Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround Sound tracks, both in Mayan with optional subtitles
available in English, French and Spanish. The DTS is amazing.
Synopsis: When his idyllic existence is brutally
disrupted by a violent invading force, a man is taken on a perilous
journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing
end awaits him. Through a twist of fate and spurred by the power
of his love for his woman and his family, he will make a desperate
break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life.
Extras?

Final Verdict: It's bloody and gory and I'm sure
they'll come out with a calmer version. But if you can stomach it—it's
a great ride.

Epic
Movie (Unrated) (1 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ May 22, 2007
What It’s About: Another
extremely idiotic movie from the likes of "Scary Movie."
Again, al the funny parts are in the commercial. Again, you'll rent
it hoping for a few good laughs and again, you'll wish you hadn't.
I like these movies in theory but in reality they always disappoint
me. Will someone make an intelligent spoof movie like in the old
days? Without projectile vomit, making drugs look cool and fart
jokes? One can wish…
Technical Stuff: Had a screener here and the picture
was pretty good. It alwsy suffers a bit from Fox's watermarks but
I'd say it'll be a clean DVD. The sound is also excellent 5.1 for
a comedy.
Synopsis: Four not-so-young orphans—one raised
by a curator at the Louvre (where an albino assassin lurks), another
a refugee from Mexican "libre" wrestling, the third a
recent victim of snakes on her plane, and the fourth a "normal"
resident of a mutant "X" community—visit a chocolate
factory, where they stumble into an enchanted wardrobe that transports
them to the land of Gnarnia (with a "G").
There they meet a flamboyant pirate captain and earnest students
of wizardry—and join forces with, among others, a wise-but-horny
lion to defeat the evil White Bitch of Gnarnia.

Final Verdict: The best thing about the movie is
Jayma Mays, also known as Charlie or Ugly Betty and Hiro girlfriend
on Heroes. She's adorable and plays the silly airhead role perfectly.
Otherwise, this movie sucks. Big time. Oh, and what makes it unrated
is a naked girl who runs out of the wardrobe for no good reason.

Michael
J. Fox Comedy Favorites Collection (4 out of 5 stars)
Universal/ May 15, 2007
What It’s About: How
can you not love Michael J. Fox? Not only is he adorable, and a
great actor, he's personally overcome so many hardships and been
so darn strong. Plus, his movies are hilarious.
This set is a great look back and the films that helped make him
famous.
Technical Stuff: Not much new here, with the picture
looking the same as in the original releases of these which is decent
and the sound also decent. They'll remake these into special editions
someday, I guarantee it.
Synopsis: He's one of the most endearing and beloved
comic actors of all time, and now, you can own four of his most
hilarious films in one incredible collection: The Michael J. Fox

to conquer the backstabbing business world in The Secret of My Success,

treasures that's sure to have you laughing again and again!
The Secret Of My Success
It's one hilarious step after another when a mail room worker (Fox)

The Hard Way

Dreamgirls
(4 out of 5 stars)
DreamWorks/ May 1, 2007
What It’s About:
Dreamgirls is one of those movies that garners a huge amount of
attention, and you can’t help but think that it was all a
publicity machine. Sure, it’s a good movie. Sure, Jennifer
Hudson is awesome and completely steals the show form the wooden
Beyonce. But was it Oscar-worthy?
I say no. Although enjoyable, it wasn’t earth-shattering or
brilliant. Perhaps I don’t get it. Either way, while I can
certainly recommend the film and think it’s wonderfully entertaining,
I will not bow down with those who say it’s ground-breaking.
I love Hudson and “I Am Telling You” made me want to
cry and gave me goosebumps. That’s the highlight of the film.
I could watch it over and over. Dreamgirls is a great movie with
catchy music but I wouldn’t give it a standing O.
Technical Stuff: It looks and sounds amazing. The
picture is perfect, not a mark. The sound is also amazing—the
5.1 and 2.0 are both great and the music is full and rich. They
did the movie justice with technicals.
Synopsis: With showstopping performances by a star-studded
cast, Dreamgirls soars with the amazing story of three female singers
who learn that anything is possible when you hold onto your dreams.
Grammy® winner Beyonce Knowles (Deena), Academy Award® winner
Jamie Foxx (Curtis) and Golden Globe® winner Eddie Murphy (James
"Thunder" Early) shine in unforgettable roles that display
their matchless talents. And Jennifer Hudson (Effie) is a revelation,
in the breakthrough performance that earned her the 2006 Academy
Award® for Best Supporting Actress. Based on the Tony Award®
winning broadway hit and directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon
(screenwriter of Chicago), the Oscar® winning Dreamgirls is
"a triumph" of movie entertainment that will dazzle you
again and again.
Extras?

Stomp
the Yard (4 out of 5 stars)
Sony/ May 15, 2006
What It’s About:
If you like dancing, you’ll probably love Stomp the Yard.
Its’s not a great movie by any means but it’s fun and
enthusiastic. Everything here is a cliché, but you really
don’t care ‘cause it’s so darn fun.
The characters are charismatic, the dancing is amazing and really
cool to watch. I’d watch the sequel.
Technical Stuff: The widescreen picture looks
almost perfect as it should since it’s a brand new movie.
The sound is solid, and the music comes through with power. DD 5.1.
Synopsis: DJ (Columbus Short), an amazing underground
street dancer, hasn’t been in college for a day before he’s
entranced by the lovely April (Meagan Good). Working as a gardener
to pay the bills, DJ doesn’t fit in with the wealthier students
around campus, but one thing does catch his attention - the rival
fraternity competition known as "stepping." With April’s
help, DJ learns about the legacy and heritage behind the fraternities
and decides to join up. Now part of an official step group, DJ now
must balance rehearsals, work, and school, while at the same time
winning the heart of the girl of his dreams. With the National Step
Championship drawing closer, DJ must learn to stop dancing as an
individual, and to start stepping as part of a team.

Dirty
Dancing: 20th Anniversary Edition (5 out of 5 stars)
Maple Pictures/ May 8, 2007
What It’s About:
I watched “Dirty Dancing” when I was about 9 and I didn’t
get it. A baby-sitter I had showed it to me and I was super-confused.
I was in no rush to watch it again. But when I did, about 10 years
later, it became one of my favourite movies ever. It’s a classic.
No one can argue that.
This 20th Anniversary Edition is killer. The extras are amazing
and incredibly plentiful. Even if you have this on DVD, this is
an edition worth grabbing!
Technical Stuff: The picture looks amazing and
"She's Like the Wind" xomes through the speakers with
power.
Synopsis: It was the summer of 1963, innocent 17 year-old Baby vacations
with her parents Kellerman’s Catskills resort. One evening
she is lured to the staff quarters by stirring music. There she
meets Johnny, the dashing hotel dance instructor. He is as experienced
as Baby is naïve. Baby soon becomes Johnny’s pupil in
dance and love.

for fans of the film, all these extras as killer!

Beverly
Hills 90210: The Complete Second Season (5 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ May 1, 2007
What It’s About:
Can you believe how long it’s been since this show was on
the air? It makes me feel so darn old! Watching Brenda break up
with Dylan brought back so many memories it’s not even funny.
That is an iconic moment in television history. So was it ruined
on this DVD set?
Everyone remembers Brenda and Dylan sitting in his car at the beach
and her crying and breaking it off. And everyone also remembers
that playing on his radio at the time was “Losing my Religion,”
by REM. But on this DVD release it’s just some generic rock.
I realize that the change music on DVD releases because they no
longer have the rights but this is so important! Sigh. Maybe I’m
holding on to my childhood too tightly.
Anywho, this was a great season with a lot of great storylines and
episodes. The big deal was the death of Scott, David Silver’s
best friend. He accidentally shoots himself and David has to deal
with the aftermath, since he had really neglected Scott over the
last year.
Also big was David and Kelly’s parents dating, Brandon’s
relationship with Emily Valentine, and Kelly almost getting raped
and dating Jake on Melrose Place.
It’s a great season and fans will love every melodramatic
minute of it!
Technical Stuff: The picture isn’t great.
It looks grainy and like it’s very poorly compressed. The
sound also comes out kinda flat. Perhaps it’s an age thing,
but I still think they could have done a better job.
Synopsis: Catch the season where things really
start to sizzle. As the Walsh twins (Jason Priestly and Shannen
Doherty) learn their way around a town where kids grow up fast,
their friends Dylan (Luke Perry), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Tori
Spelling), Steve (Ian Ziering), Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris) and
David (Brian Austin Green) experience the highs and lows of love,
lust, and loss. Available for the first time on DVD, this 8-disc
collection of Beverly Hills 90210: The Second Season turns up the
heat with all 28 unforgettable episodes!
Extras?
Meet the Walshes (7:06)
Our Favorite Valentine (5:20)
Everything You Need to Know About Beverly Hills 90210 Season 2 (17:40)
Final Verdict: Love it. I wish the music was the
same as the original but still.
