Bedtime Stories BR (4 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ April 7, 2009

So the big complaint here is that Adam Sandler sold out. I mean, he’s supposed to be actually funny. So how can you be funny in a Disney movie? You can’t swear, or moon, or make sexual references. Well…he does the last one. So it’s not typical Adam Sandler funny. But it’s still cute. And bear in mind it’s Disney—hence, it’s for the wee ones! And they’ll howl with laughter.
It’s the story of a hotel employee who wants to be manager who gets stuck babysitting his sister’s kids for a few nights. He finds when he tells them bedtime stories they come true the next day. It’s cute and I loved seeing Keri Russell in it. BUT, the ending is simpy and seems like there is 10 minutes at the end there that they stuck on just to make it longer. Still, the Blu-Ray is beautiful to watch and the special effects are really cool. You kids (aged about 8-14 will love it).

Slumdog Millionnaire (5 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ March 31, 2009

How can I not give this five stars? It won best picture for gawd’s sake. Is all the hype worth it? It’s really hard to say. I wish I’d seen it back at the Toronto Film Festival before all the hype started. Once a movie is stated to be amazing a gazillion times, how can it ever live up to your expectations? Right?
It’s a fantastic movie. The story is unique and interesting and the characters are wonderful. The kids in it are amazing actors and you really feel like you’re not watching a movie but some sort of a documentary. But a really good one! I would say it’s worth the hype but be aware of that when you watch it. It’s not like the movie is without fault (I think it’s a smidge too long)it’s just that it manages to transcend those faults and still be magical. My screener sucked so I can’t comment on picture or sound.

Marley and Me (4 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ March 31, 2009

When I walked out of the movie theatre after this movie with my mother, she was pissed. She (like myself) is the ultimate dog lover and she couldn’t believe the dog died. She went on a rampage about how it’s disgusting that people would make a movie about a dig dying. She totally missed the point.
Marley and Me is indeed a story about a dog but it’s also a story about life. As always, the book is better than the movie but the movie was pretty cute as well. I think if you’ve read the book you’ll get a little more out of it. The story is more about the circle of life. It’s adorable and I think Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are both great.

Quantum of Solace BR (3 out of 5 stars)
Sony/ March 24, 2009

LOVED Casino Royale. LOVED Daniel Craig as the new Bond. Did not love Quantum of Solace. For a few reasons. First—it was boring. The plot was kind of lame and although I understand why this movie had to happen I think they could have had him handling his grief and getting revenge in much cooler ways.
Second—no real Bond girl. I’m all about the Bond girls; they’re the girl I will never be so they’re fun to watch. Third—lame-ass villains. Bond should have way cooler villains that these. Still, the special effects were cool and the action sequences were still rather well-done. And we all love us a little Judy Dench don’t we? So I’m hoping that the next Bond comes back full-force. This Blu-Ray though, reminds me why I got a player. It’s amazing. Worth re-watching this movie just for that.

Australia (2 out of 5 stars)
March 3, 2009

I know this movie got a bad rep. And I know it was a flop. And I am definitely biased because I LOVE Baz Luhrmann. I think he’s a complete genius. This movie, I hate to say, bored the crap out of me.
Some people liked it, some did not. I tried. I had such high hopes. But the plot is very slow moving and there just aren’t characters you get attached to. Boo. I got a screener so sadly I have no idea what the final picture looks like but this one wasn’t great. The sound here was also disappointing but that could be a screener issue as well.
Lastly, there is a pathetic lack of special features which makes me suspicious that there is a special edition coming up by the end of the year. Overall, don’t listen to the critics—watch it for yourself.

JAG: The Eighth Season (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ March 17, 2009

I’ve reviewed numerous previous seasons of JAG and as always, I think this show is very underrated. I don’t know anyone who watches it but it’s really quite fun. As far as I know it’s also extremely accurate with its portrayal of the military and they have an army liaison on set to make sure of that which is quite cool.
This is the season that launched the NCIS spinoff, and had Harriet announce she’s preggo. Also, this is the season with the marriage. This dvd set includes a gag reel but nothing else. Picture and sound are top notch although they obviously can’t compare to the new shows shot in high-def.

Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa (4 out of 5 stars)
DreamWorks/ February 6, 2009

I loved the original Madagascar and have seen it numerous times. So I was super-excited for the second one. Perhaps I got my hopes up a little too much but I ended up a little disappointed. It’s good—especially the first half, it’s just not great.
As always, the penguins slay me and it’s all fun and entertaining until they get to Africa and then it’s not as funny. Still kids will love it and I did laugh several times out loud so adults will like it too. I think it just got a little over-hyped for me. Picture looks amazing—would have loved to have seen the Blu-Ray.

South Park: The Complete Twelfth Season (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ March 10, 2009

How does this show manage to stay funny as hell? I have no clue how Matt Stone and Trey Parker keep coming up with ideas but I love them and I especially love watching the show on dvd with all f-bombs intact.
The best part of the show is how it manages to stay ripped from the headlines. The topics are always current and in this season our favourite characters met up with Britney Spears, President Obama, the 2008 Olympics and angry Canadians (woot woot!)
Technicals are still a little crude but the colours are nice and bright and the sound is excellent for what it is. Fans will definitely snap this season up.
