Revolutionary Road Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ June 2, 2009

This is not an easy movie to sit through. What a downer, man. Make sure you watch this when you’re in a great mood. This drama starring Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio (weee!) is not the sunshine of all movies, but it’s not supposed to be. Frankly, the fact that I wanted to cry and hide in a corner after watching it is why it’s so damn good. The two actors are so incredible here, you can almost forgive them for Titanic (which I did love when it came out but watching it again—holy cheese.)
The couple meet at a party and then we fast-forward a few years and they have a couple of kids, a house, and no idea why they’re together. Sigh. They are miserable and Sam Mendes (the director) makes it very clear there was never a passionate love story between them—they just married the wrong person. So we go from there, probably replaying the saga of many a married couple who go to great lengths to try and save their marriage. Winslet is divine as always and DiCaprio really shows what a great actor he is here.
The Blu-Ray is perfection with the colours on the picture coming through crisply (warm changes to bleak as does the relationship). The 5.1 HD Surround Track does its job marvellously considering it doesn’t have a huge amount of work to do. The extras are the same as the DVD edition except in HD.

Raising the Bar: The Complete First Season (3 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ June 2, 2009

Zack Morris is a lawyer. Okay, he’s not but itsn’t is super-hard to see Mark-Paul Gosselaar as anything but? He plays an idealistic public defender who wants to maintain his ethics and morals no matter what. Good luck sparky.
If you’re a fan of legal dramas like Law&Order, you’ll probably get a kick out of this newcomer. It has some interesting cases and witty dialogue but still left me wanting a little more. There are only ten episodes here which makes it quick viewing and I’m hoping the second season has a little more depth in terms of the characters. I think the show is still finding its legs but there is enough here to warrant watching more.
The picture looks fine but I have seen better quality with TV on DVD. Extras include audio commentaries, Sworn Testimony: True Stories Of A Public Defender where Producer and Public Defender David Feige talks about how the series went from being just an idea to what it has become, Behind the Bar: An After Hours Roundtable with the Cast, where the cast talks about the ins and outs of working on season one of the series and Bloopers.

Taken (4 out of 5 stars)
Fox, May 12, 2009

There is nothing fancy-pants about this movie. It’s a straightforward man on a mission film. The tagline is “I will find you and I will kill you,” which pretty much explains the plot of the movie. Someone kidnaps Liam Neeson’s daughter in Paris and he sets out to find them and kill them.
Neeson is great in the movie—I really feel like his acting wasn’t fully appreciated. I totally bought everything he was selling. What’s cool about the DVD is that it has the original Unrated version which is much better than the chopped PG-13 theatrical cut. The disc includes both. The movie is very fast-paced and incredibly entertaining.
Fox has sent out a screener so I can’t comment on picture or sound as they’re never very good on these. But I can certainly Highly Recommend the movie!

True Blood: The Complete First Season Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros./ May 19, 2009

What is the freaking fascination with vampires? First Count Chocula, then Twilight and now True Blood…which SUCKS for the first few episodes by the way (hey—I made a pun!). But…stick with it. The show starts off incredible clunky and stupid. The characters are lame and the acting doesn’t go anywhere. But then it finds itself. And it’s goooooood.
The whole idea is that vampires aren’t just real and out in the open—they’re trendy. It’s a neat idea. There is a ton of nudity in this show which makes me giggle and the one-liners they come up with make me absolutely cackle with delight. It’s seriously campy and doesn’t take itself too, too seriously. The cliffhangers at the end of each episode are pretty impressive too, making the Blu-Ray marathon a great idea.
It looks amazing in high-def; the 1.78:1 image is extraordinarily sharp and detailed. They say that a lot of energy went into True Blood’s sound mix and you can tell. The 24-bit DTS-HD Master Audio is very immersive and you really feel surrounded by the atmosphere. Loved it.

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Fifth Season (4 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros/ May 12, 2009

There is something to be said about sitcoms that can stand the test of time (except King of Queens). So many are formulaic and just don’t work for more than one or two seasons. While there is nothing complex about Two and a Half Men, it manages to keep the laughs going. It took me a while to get into this show; I think I started watching in the fourth season, and I was surprised to see I actually found it funny.
This season was decent but not one of the best. It was nice to see Jake start junior high and grow up a bit but I found the whole CSI swap thing lame. The show is full of sexual innuendos which sometimes get super-dirty, but that’s part of its charm. There were some great guest stars this season including Jenny McCarthy, Janeane Garofalo, Ryan Styles, Robert Wagner and more. I have to say though, I think the character of Berta gets the best lines.
The picture and sound here are adequate but nothing too spectacular especially for an average television sitcom. It’s just fine. The extras are pretty boring but you do get the CSI episode that was part of the crossover which could be of interest of fans of both shows.

Bride Wars (2 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ April 28, 2009

I was really looking forward to Bride Wars. I love Kate Hudson and like Anne Hathway (although I think she’s getting a little big for her britches.) I love wedding movies. I have two friends getting married months apart and already see bride wars so the same day should be hilar, right? Not so much, it turns out.
Although the film does have some moments, for the most part all the funny is given away in the trailer. The main characters aren’t likeable. They’re shallow and annoying and completely disingenuous. They compete with each other over getting engaged (and one actually forces her boyfriend to propose since she found the ring ahead of time). Ugh. They end up booked at the Plaza on the same day in June, and neither one will give up the date or have a double wedding (both of which are rational ways out of this but would effectively end the movie in twelve seconds). So we get to lame-o revenge plots that include bad fake tans and blue hair. Sigh.
All in all, it’s pretty obnoxious, even for this chick-flick lover. The extras are also lame and I can’t comment on picture or sound as I received a Fox screener.

Hotel for Dogs (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ April 28, 2009

It’s a movie about dogs! And kids! How could you possibly not love it? Well, I didn’t love it but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. There is a story about two foster kids (Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin) who take in all the strays they can. When they find an abandoned hotel, they decide to make it into a shelter and take in every stray possible so the mean dogcatchers can’t find them.
It’s all about the dogs here. Lots of dogs everywhere! Ooooooh, cute dogs! And the movie is in fact, quite adorable. It also has a great message about saving dogs from shelters and not just focusing on purebreds (Beverly Hills Chihuahua anyone?)
The picture is lovely, crisp and bright. The sound is a sharp Dolby 5.1 with French and Spanish 5.1 dubs and optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Families with kids will love this one as it’s pretty darn cute.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (5 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ May 5, 2009

There is no question The Curious Case of Benjamin Button lives up to its hype. This type of movie is rare and enchanting and makes you remember what the art of moviemaking is all about. It spans 80 years and begins with a daughter (Julia Ormond) narrating a story to her mother (Cate Blanchett) on her death bed.
The story is about Benjamin (Brad Pitt), a baby born on the eve of the end of World War 1, whose mother dies in childbirth and his father, horrified by the sight of him, leaves him on the steps of an old-age home. He is taken in my Queenie (Taraji P. Henson) and grows up there, fitting right in with the elderly as he is born old. I’m sure you’ve all seen the previews and know he gets younger as his life goes on. Pitt is great in the role and shows a new side of himself. Blanchett is perfection as always. The movie is a fairy-tale and I loved it.
The picture is flawless for a DVD and the sound is also perfect. I did get a peek at the Blu-Ray though, and it’s stunning. Go for that if you can.
