The Hangover Blu-Ray
Warner/ around $25
Who It’s For: The comedy fan in your life. It was the BEST comedy film on the year (for adults, please—do not give this one to the kiddies).
Why They’ll Love It: They can laugh over and over at the hilarity. They can swoon over and over Bradley Cooper (who I thought was rank until this movie where for some reason his pretty hair entranced me and now he has become my new crush). They can watch Andy from The Office in amazement as he is sooo much funnier here. They can also check out the new extra 100 photos from the missing camera which are roll on the floor funny. I saw this with someone who is not hugely into comedies and even she had to praise it. |
Harry Potter Years 1-6 Blu-Ray
Warner/ $100
Who It’s For: Anyone. Even those who haven’t read the books will get a kick out these flicks.
Why They’ll Love It: They look KILLER on Blu-Ray. You get all six movies so you can have a marathon on New Year’s Day and watch them all over again. This set also includes the new release Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which has it’s own disc of Special Features. This is a great gift. Add a Potter-looking scarf and you’re all set! |
Beverly Hills 90210: Season 8
Melrose Place: Season 5 Vol. 2
Paramount/ around $30 each
Who It’s For: The woman who grew up in the 90s and watched these as originals, yo.
Why They’ll Love It: The new ones are alright (although the new Melrose is kinda sucky), but there is nothing like watching the original episodes of these beloved series. I especially love how Hilary Swank is pictured so prominently on the cover of 90210 when she was in like, one episode that season (okay, maybe two)…okay fine she was in a bunch but then she got booted and apparently never recovered. Hah. Except for the Oscar thingy.
Melrose Place was so much better as the original than the new one. This season was solid, although I’m still kinda PO’s that Paramount split it in two. By the end of season five, Courtney Thorne-Smith (Alison), Grant Show (Jake), Josie Bissett (Jane), Laura Leighton (Sydney), and Marcia Cross (Kimberly) were all gone. This is the last good season, in my opinion. I just didn’t really care about the new peeps as much. So give it while it’s good! |
Julie and Julia Giftset
Sony/ around $30
Who It’s For: The foodie in your life.
Why They’ll Love It: This giftset (which I can’t find a photo to save my life of and I’ve already dismantled mine to examine it) comes with the Julie and Julia DVD, Julia Child’s Kitchen Wisdom book and a cute fridge magnet that let’s you make a grocery list (think magnetic poetry). Anyone would be thrilled to get this amazing movie on it’s own for Christmas, but throw in this set and it’ll put a smile on any foodie’s face. |
Up
G-Force
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Disney/ around $30 each for Blu-Ray
Who It’s For: The wee little ones in your life or the big ones who like wee little movies—like me!
Why They’ll Love It: Why wouldn’t they? Up is an instant classic that parents will love watching with their kids. G-Force is kind of stupid to be honest, but kids will love it. The guinea pigs here, voiced by Sam Rockwell, Penélope Cruz and Tracy Morgan, are fun a kids of funny, but the movie for some reason tries to add an emotional level which is totally unnecessary and turns the film into a bit of a clunker. Oh well, still, the tots will want to watch these furry faces over and over. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Blu-Ray is a must-have for any Disney fan and with the resurgence of classic animation through The Princess and the Frog, you little one may finally be interested in seeing an original Disney masterpiece. Plus—you need to snap it up before it goes back in that stupid vault.

Gone With the Wind Ultimate Collector's Edition
The Wizard of Oz Ultimate Collector's Edition
Warner Bros./ Around $70
Who It’s For: The crazy film buff who loves all things classic and mainstream (we have something for the TRUE film buff later).
Why They’ll Love It: They’re probably already be drooling over these gorgeous box sets. Two of Hollywood's most celebrated classics were released theatrically in 1939. And now, 70 years later, they're getting the true VIP treatment on DVD and Blu-ray. Both have been meticulously restored, with The Wizard of Oz getting such a detailed, frame-by-frame high-definition makeover for the Blu-ray version that viewers can even see blemishes on Dorothy's face, giving the entire film a new sense of realism. Both Wizard and Gone With the Wind, from Warner, also come with hours of new or enhanced content and such collectibles as an Oz watch, memorabilia books and frame-worthy prints. Exclusive to the Blu-ray edition: the six-hour MGM documentary, When the Lion Roars. |

Rocky: The Undisputed Collection
MGM/ $80 Blu-Ray
Who It’s For: The gym buff who loves to run stairs to the Rocky Theme on his/ her Ipod.
Why They’ll Love It: There have been a ton of special releases of Rocky films lately but this year’s Blu-ray only set is the best Rocky anthology yet because it’s the first HD, meaning you can make out every meticulously designed bruise and lesion on Rocky’s face as he takes his numerous beatings. You get all six movies plus a bonus disc. I didn’t notice any special features on the two-hour bonus disc I hadn’t already spotted in my numerous other Rocky collections, but really, what else is there to say at this point? It’s a great set and would make a killer gift. |

The Sopranos: The Complete First Season Blu-Ray
Warner Bros./ Around $40
Who It’s For: Your dad, who always jokes about being the Godfather of the family.
Why They’ll Love It: If they’re fans of the show, what better way to enjoy it then on Blu-Ray? If they’ve never seen it before, it’s a great kick-start to their collection as they’ll certainly be buying all the seasons from this point. Plus, I have to say, I think the first season is the best one. Looks great on BR, but I would have like to see more special features. Ah, fuggedaboutit. |
Star Trek Combo Pack, Paramount ($40)
Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, Paramount ($60 DVD, $90 Blu-ray)
Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection, Paramount ($40 DVD, $70 Blu-ray)
Who It’s For: The Trekkie in your life. Don’t lie—we all have one. And if it’s you, well, we all deserve a little treat for ourselves while shopping.
Why They’ll Love It: It’s been a banner year for the Trekkies with so much goodness being restored and rereleased and then the new movie coming out. So they’ll have a field day with the release on both DVD and Blu-ray of every Star Trek movie, including this year's summer hit. The combo pack features the new movie in standard DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy. The Original Motion Picture Collection includes the first movie based on the 1960s sci-fi TV series, 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and its five sequels, while The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection features all five films based on the reborn 1987 series. Ling long and prosper watching these, yo. |

DC Universe Ultimate Movie Collection
Warner Bros./ Around $70
Who It’s For: Your geeky Batman/ Superman- loving younger brother (or sister).
Why They’ll Love It: This Blu-Ray set includes 6 movies, all inspired by graphic novels and includes 6 different superheroes. You get Superman: Doomsday, Wonder Woman, Batman: Gotham Knight, Justice League: The New Frontier, Green Lantern: The First Flight, Superman/ Batman: Public Enemies. They feature solid production values and PG 13-rated scripts, many of which have been adapted from DC Comics' more popular story arcs.
There is a TON of extras to go through between the six discs, between the audio commentaries, making-of featurettes plus producer Bruce Timm's favourite episodes from the various superhero TV shows DC and Warner have worked on over the past 17 years. It will keep them busy until New Years. And maybe even on New Years. Yes that was a comic-book geek has no life joke. I can make it since my hubby got all excited when he saw this set. |
