Fringe: The Complete First Season Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Warner/ September 8, 2009

It took me a little while to get into Fringe, the new show from Lost’s J.J. Abrams. Some of the first few episodes just freaked me right out. The hubby said this was just like X-Files which I never got into. I almost gave up on the show but thanks to Joshua Jackson’s Peter and his wacko smarty-pants dad Walter, I stayed the course.
But it was very easy for me to fall asleep during this one. There is something about Olivia (Anna Torv) that just makes me drowsy. So I can’t say this show was gripping for me but it seemed to be for my hubby who is much more into this genre than I am. It will be interesting to see how the Season Finale cliffhanger is played out as I think it was about parallel universes or something.
Since it is a brand new show, everything about it should be absolutely perfect visually right? Well…right. The Blu-Ray looks incredible and fans will be impressed. The only caveat is that subtitles are only available in English.

Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fifth Season (4 out of 5 stars)
Buena Vista/ September 1, 2009

I know a lot of people weren’t too impressed with Desperate Housewives this season, but I have to admit I dug it. The whole fast-forward five years thing took some getting used to but it did provide some fresh material for the show and allowed for some interesting plotlines. My favourite of these ladies to watch has got to be Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) just because she’s so ridiculous and funny.
The stryline with Edie’s new husband his mysterious past wasn’t all that in my opinion, but thankfully there was enough going on around it that made it entertaining. And of course, you’ve all heard by now that (spoiler alert!) this is Edie’s last season which doesn’t make me all that sad either. I’m glad the ladies were allowed to be their funny selves because last season got a little heavy for me. I’m really looking forward to this season coming up to see how certain things play out (like Lynette’s news at the end of the season).
The DVD set is packed with Bonus Features and its picture and sound are flawless as usual with Buena Vista. Fans of the show will be grabbing this one for sure.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Enchanted Musical Edition (5 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ September 8, 2009

I had totally forgotten about this movie, and watching it again reminded me that this was one of my favourites when I was a wee lassie. Of course, it’s not quite as magical to me as it was originally. Would you believe this won the 1971 Academy-Award for Best Special Effects? Seriously. How times change. But it still looks pretty cool today.
The film follows the story of an apprentice witch, Miss Price (Angela Lansbury), who, living in Southern England at the outset of World War II is forced to take in three children from London (a practice established in order to protect children from bombings).  Carrie (Cindy O'Callaghan), Paul (Roy Snart), and Charlie (Ian Weighill) had no idea upon moving in with Miss Price that she was a witch, but an aborted attempt at flying on a broomstick quickly clues them in. This edition adds about 20 mins of song and dance into the movie which I think hurts it. The pace seems off and it seems to drag a bit whereas I remember it being quite lively. Still it’s a fun one and kids today should still like it and not think it’s totally lame.
Features
"The Wizards if Special Effects," hosted by Jennifer Stone from Wizards of Waverly Place, who serves as a special effects apprentice and learns about the Academy Award-winning 1971 special effects in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, then compares them to the special effects; "Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers," takes a look behind the scenes from a musical point of view of Bedknobs and Broomsticks with the Sherman Brothers, Angela Lansbury, and Scott MacQueen, exploring the origins of the songs, including what was deleted and what made it into the final version of the film; Deleted Song "A Step in the Right Direction"; a rare clip of David Tomlinson’s recording of the song "Portobello Road."

I Love You, Man Blu-Ray (5 out of 5 stars)
Paramount, August 11, 2009

Paul Rudd usually plays supporting characters very very well. He has the goofy, charming but funny friend role down pat. So it’s interesting to see him here in a lead role although he pretty much plays the same character he always does. But it works, and this “Bromantic Comedy” is pretty freaking hilarious.
Rudd play Peter Klaven, a real-estate agent who has just proposed to his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones). She tells he girlfriends right away and is a little confused why Peter has no one to tell. He doesn’t really have any close guy friends and sets out going on man-dates trying to find someone to be his best man.
He meets Sidney Fife (Jason Segal) who is super laid-back and adored the band Rush. The two hit it off and become buddies. The movie is filled with laughs thanks to the crazy amount of comedic talent that shows up: Jamie Pressly, Burns, Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Jane Curtain, Jon Favreau, Thomas Lennon, Larry Wilmore, and Aziz Ansari. I have to say, for a comedy, this one really hits the mark.
The Blu-Ray is an outstanding transfer and the sound is crisp and clean. The gag reel is hilarious, make sure you check it out.
Features
Closed Caption; Deleted scenes; Extended scenes; Gag reel; The making of I Love You, Man; Commentary by director John Hamburg, Paul Rudd and Jason Segel

Gossip Girl: The Complete Second Season (5 out of 5 stars)
Warner/ August 18, 2009

I am completely and utterly addicted to Gossip Girl. It’s my guilty pleasure every week and I feel like a dirty old lady watching these nubile young things sleep around. But it’s not just that that makes it all so appealing. Gossip Girl is actually smart. Not intellectually smart of course, but witty. And funny as all heck.

The sophomore season had a lot to prove after a stellar first season left new fans wanting more. Despite the lame-ass “Jenny runs away from home” storyline and the Lily spinoff episode for a show that never happened (thank god) this season is gold. Of course the show is all about Blair. I can leave Serena and her little boy Dan. Vanessa bores me to tears. And Jenny needs to sit down. Blair and Chuck are why I live for Monday nights. The chemistry, the backstabbing, the one-liners—love, love, love. I Cannot wait for season three. Have you seen the teasers? “No more headbands.” Perfection. The DVD set has  all 25 episodes, and a whack of extras including a hilarious Gag Reel.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Universal/ July 28, 2009

I would like to take this opportunity to officially apologize to all Battlestar fans out there. For years, I mocked you. I laughed. I called you geeks. And then I became one of you and have to eat my words. I’m not usually a fan of the sci-fi but my husband made me watch Battlestar. And surprise!—It’s great. Now this last season and the season before it were not as good as the first two by any means. But this is it—the final episodes. And they do start off pretty slowly.
In fact, I was really dragging to watch all of them.

The season picks up where the first half ended, which is where the survivors finally found Earth only to see it as a destroyed and useless planet. Bummer. Then you get a few really dark and slow episodes that are there for development and while I see why they’re necessary in the end, ultimately I like to see things blown up. So is the end satisfying? You make the decision. I have never been happy with a final episode of anything except Sex and the City. This was pretty good to me but could have been better. The Blu-Ray set is spectacular with a ton of features and the image and sound is perfection. So…are you geeks going to watch Caprica?

Dexter: The Third Season Blu-Ray (4 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ August 18, 2009

Dexter is a brilliant show. It somehow manages to mesh hilarity and horror together in a completely riveting way. Most of the credit for that goes to Michael C. Hall who is fantastic as Dexter—the serial killer with the heart of gold. Last season had some annoying moments for me in the character of Lila who thankfully is gone. Our new character is played by Jimmy Smits, Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado who really bonds with Dexter.

There are some slow moments here and there but overall it’s a strong season and the actors are really now settled into their roles. Particularly great is Julie Benz as Rita, Dexter long-time girlfriend. She really shines in her storyline this year. The Blu-Ray set is stunning and picture quality couldn’t be better, especially the bright Miami outdoor scenes. The sound is mostly dialogue but it’s crisp and clear. Dexter is a show I always look forward to watching thanks to its originality and addictive storylines. I really look forward to John Lithgow joining next season. He should kill.

Hannah Montana: The Movie Blu-Ray (2 out of 5 stars)
Disney/ August 18, 2009

I am not a Miley Cyrus fan. I find her incredibly entitled and annoying. I also feel sorry for the girl, getting pimped out by her parents like this. Did you see the Teen Choice Awards and her straddling the pole? ‘Nuff said. Still, I expected to enjoy the Hannah Montana movie a bit more. Instead, I found it pretty bland.

It’s all about the soundtrack I think and the movie seems like an afterthought. I’m sure the tweeny-boppers would be okay with that but from what I understand even they weren’t beating down to dorrs to watch this. Personally, I’d rather expose my kids to something like Wizards of Waverly Place—love that one!

Watchmen (2 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros./ July 21, 2009

I have no idea what the original story of the Watchmen is. I know nothing of comic books or graphic novels or whatever (start sending the hate mail now!). All I know is that I sat down to watch it thinking it would be some harmless fun and I was totally wrong. I found this movie poorly acted, incredibly and disgustingly violent, and boring as s*!&. I stuck it through, mainly because I had the new issue of In Style to flip through while I watched.
Don’t think this is anything like Ironman or even Sin City. It’s slow and fragmented and seems like it’s trying to put eighteen narratives into one movie. On the bright side, the Blu-Ray picture looks amazing and the movie itself is pretty cool-looking cinematography-wise. This direcor’s cut has about 24 minutes of extra film which frankly, is too much. I can’t personally recommend this one for my peeps and if you read my site you probably have similar taste. So I would stay away from this one.
Features: Blu-ray Disc Features: Region [unknown] Additional Release Material: Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World Music Video: My Chemical Romance Desolation Row Featurette: 1. Warner Bros. Van Wilder: Freshman Year (1 out of 5 stars)
Paramount/ July 21, 2009

Can I just say that I don’t expect any movie with Kristen Cavallari in a main role to be good. But this was just awful. 2002 saw the release of Van Wilder, which starred Ryan Reynolds as a perennial college party guy who has the run of Coolidge College and had been there for seven years. It wasn’t great but had some laughs.
Freshman Year is the story of how Van Wilder became the Coolidge College “hero” seen in the first film. This time Van is played by Jonathan Bennett. He enters Coolidge College ready to party and finds a campus that is being run with an iron fist by Dean Charles Reardon (Kurt Fuller). The dean was given a hard time by Van’s dad when they were in school together, so he has it out for Van.
Van isn’t going to let the dean and his army cadets (Steve Talley, Nic Nac) get in his way of loosening up the school and teaching them how to party and have a good time again. He also sets his sights on Kaitlin (Kristin Cavallari) who at first wants nothing to do with him, but eventually sees Van’s point of view and joins his crusade.
The movie is unrated so there’s lots of gratuitous nudity, which isn’t really my think but teenage boys would get very excited. I would give this one a serious miss.
Features: DVD Features: Region 0 NTSC Keep Case Unrated Full Frame - 1.33 Widescreen - 1.85 Audio: 5.1 Surround Dolby Digital 5.0 Subtitles - French, Portuguese, Spanish Features: 1. Creating The Legend: The Making of Van Wilder: Freshman Year 2. Going Balls Out: Colossus 3. Coolidge College: Orientation Video 4. Decatur 5. Teacher's Pets Features - Bloopers: 1. Gran Torino (4 out of 5 stars)
Warner Bros/ June 9, 2009

I admit, I’m not as huge a Clint Eastwood fan as my husband and he was much more excited about this flick than I was. Ended up that I liked it more than him. Huh. I think because it was a lot of talking and required some emotional involvement while he much prefers things blowing up and bad-ass Eastwood threatening people with a gun—and then following through.
Of course, Torino got much, much props from critics and the Academy and all is well with that. Eastwood plays a mean sonofabitch quite well. The movie is smart and powerful. Would I watch it again? Maybe, but not for a long while. It’s not one of those heavy rotation flicks like Die Hard. Still, I’m a fan and recommend it. The blu-ray is perfection.
Features: Blu-ray Disc Features: 2-Disc Set Region [unknown] Widescreen Audio: (unspecified) English Additional Release Material: Featurette: 1. Behind the Story 2. The Eastwood Way 3. Manning the Wheel 4. Gran Torino: More Than a Car Interactive Features: BD Live

Prison Break: The Final Break (3 out of 5 stars)
Fox/ July 21, 2009

So this is weird. These are two episodes that never aired that take place after the fourth season of the show. Now, I’ll admit, I haven’t actually watched Prison Break since midway through season two, but I did find these kind of entertaining, if not absurd.
The entire thing moves very quickly and has very little character development. I had read a little online to prepare me for what I missed in the last two seasons and even my head was spinning. Apparently, this dvd makes the series finale quite sad. I haven’t seen it, so I can’t comment. Is it necessary to get a Blu-Ray version of these episodes? Only if you’re a die-hard fan. Otherwise, just rent it. The Blu-Ray does look great though and certainly makes for a much more enjoyable viewing experience. Features: Blu-ray Disc Features: Region 1 NTSC Anamorphic Widescreen - 1.78 Audio: DTS HD Master Audio - English Subtitles - English, French, Spanish Additional Release Material: Featurette: 1. The Old Ball and Chain & Free
